    • She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS-Mormon). She was raised in the LDS church because she was blessed with a grandmother, Martha Elizabeth Taylor Gwaltney, who accepted the Gospel and was baptized April 26, 1908. Her grandmother was taught the gospel by traveling LDS missionaries and has many living descendants who are active in the LDS church.

In 1943, while working in Long Beach, Calif., Christine met her future husband Jack Harding Gardner. At the time Jack was serving as a pilot for the Pacific Division of the Air Transport Command. Jack was also active in the LDS church. His great-grandfather, Archibald Gardner was a native of Scotland and a Utah pioneer of 1847 crossing the plains in a covered wagon.

Christine and Jack moved to Vacaville in 1955. She worked at Travis Air Force Base for 12 years and Jack worked at the California Medical Facility for 20 years.

Christine received the honor of Gold Star mother because her eldest son Jack Elroy, was the first resident from Vacaville to be killed in the Vietnam War.
